South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson's son defended him Wednesday against a charge by former President Jimmy Carter that the congressman's "You lie" outburst during a speech by President Obama was racist.
"There is not a racist bone in my dad's body," said Alan Wilson, who is running for state attorney general in South Carolina. "He doesn't even laugh at distasteful jokes."
The day before, Carter called Wilson's outburst "dastardly" and "based on racism."
"There is an inherent feeling among many in this country that an African-American should not be president," the former president, a Democrat, said. He was responding to an audience question at a town hall meeting at his presidential center in Atlanta.
The elder Wilson, a Republican, was formally rebuked Tuesday in a House vote for shouting "You lie!" during Obama's speech to Congress last Wednesday.
The shout came after the president said illegal aliens would be ineligible for federal subsidies to buy health insurance.
"It's unfortunate people make that jump," Wilson's son said of Carter's claim. "People can disagree - and appropriately disagree - on issues of substance, but when they make the jump to race it's absolutely ludicrous. My brothers and I were raised by our parents to respect everyone regardless of background or race."
Carter said Joe Wilson's outburst was a part of a trend against Obama that has included demonstrators equating him to Nazi leaders.
"Those kind of things are not just casual outcomes of a sincere debate on whether we should have a national program on health care," Carter said. "It's deeper than that."
The rare Congressional rebuke of Wilson was pushed through by Democrats angry that the Republican had violated rules of decorum and civility. Some Republicans, though, characterized the measure as a witch hunt.
Wilson, who apologized to Obama, insisted he owed the House no apology.
South Carolina's former Democratic Party chairman also said he doesn't believe Wilson is a racist.
"I think Joe's conduct was asinine, but I think it would be asinine no matter what the color of the president," said Dick Harpootlian. "I don't think Joe's outburst was caused by President Obama being African-American. I think it was caused by no filter being between his brain and his mouth."

A lack of interaction with other races leads to an insensitivity when disagreements come about. This goes for both Black and white. As evidenced by the numbers the repugnicans are the party of favor with whites, this lack of participation by minorities in the party makes the ability to disregard the legitimacy of others by the white majority a lot easier because there is no interaction with the other races in large measure. Yes Michael Steele is the "Chairman" of the repugnican party but it's interesting that he got to that position only after President Obama was elected. You can fool some of the people some of the time...

To Joe Wilson's son, we truly believe that you are right in believing that there is not a strand of Racism in your dad's DNA. Those who stood by on 08/07/1930 cheering for the death of one of God's children (James Cameron), we are sure, will vividly declare themselves non racial then, and now if questioned. Nefarious & cataclysmic racism toward Black Men is disgustingly understood. Thank goodness for brothers like President Carter and his like that speak up. Racists anywhere & everywher who, particularly HATE black men are like folks who pick their noses and swipe their fingers at the lips. It's normal! Unless there is someone else who inadvertently notices. May God Bless Us All.

If anyone thinks there is not racism in this country and people are not upset about having a Black Man as President they have their head in the sand. Here in SC there are confederate flags flying all over this place, especially in Lexington County. There are some areas as an African American I will not go into because people look at me and treat me as though I have some type of sickness. I went into a store to make a purchase and the salesperson would not even put my change in my hand she laid it on the counter, this has occured more than once these people were afraid to touch my hand. Joe Wilson's son said his father does not have a racist bone in his body, well I live in Lexington County which Joe Wilson represents and there are some of the most racist people in the world living here. I am not saying all people in SC are racist but you bet your last dollar they do exist here and I can verify that so dont call Jimmy Carter crazy or anything else he knows what he is talking about.

Is Joe Wilson still a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans? Does he condone the activities of the "Lunatic" faction that now controls the SCV? Does Joe Wilson consider the Republican Party "the Party of Lincoln"? His answers will make the decision for me.

@CHUBBS, or is that referencing all the saturated fat clogging your pores and cutting off circulation to your brain?? You dis-credited YOURSELF posting a comment that makes no effin sense and you obviously can't read either....I never defended Carter and said from the beginning, I could care less what he has to say because he's just concuring with an opinion I felt from Day 1 when Wilson made it....secondly, what "we" people are you talking about....I spoke of racist whites who still believe in segragation and pledge allegiance to the Confederate Flag. If you're not one, then STF up! It wasn't directed to you unless you have some racist beliefs you've buried below the surface....that's on you....so why don't take a specific quote or reference next time rather than blabbering away about nothing....you're reading quotes and not even familiar who posted them so put the Bong down for awhile and debate or go play with yourself again....

@Lefty, OK, so you refute a reference in the bill by screaming out "YOU LIE" being dis-respectful, something that has NEVER happened in History and the people are supposed to believe this is just a coincidence??? LOL Man, this is why AMerica is broke because of gullable, naive people who believe anything...I was expecting him to pull his conservative gun out, challenge Obama to a duel like Aaron Burr and shoot him next! LOL Yes, that's exactly how you're portrayed by your actions....it's just a coincidence again that Repubs try and deny his birth certificate and say he's not an American and a Muslim?? Who else had their "American patriotism" questioned ?? Coincidence again?? I never heard media heads calling Bush racist other than big mouth Kanye West, and no one cares about his views...Yes, because you don't think that way, don't automatically speak for everyone in your Party that doesn't share your train of though! If Dems did something to lead us down a $.hithole, I won't

CONT'D...just because I side with MOST of their politics. There are some Republican ideals I agree with and see their point as well....but right now, it hasn't been about the facts and if it's supposed to be, then things like "YOU LIE" and Beck callling Obama a racist and Limbaugh hoping he fails are detracting from any valid, reasonable points you're trying to illustrate? How many times already with Carter, Wright, Wilson, Limbaughetc,...will he have to be the middle man and stop the same issues we're wasting time discussing and just seems certain Repubs are committing to not let everyone hear the plan??? Wilson's outburst has totally deflected time away from what we should be focusing on and it seems to happen EVERYTIME he tries to introduce something new...coincidence again??? If he had a cure for cancer, they would say it's really a poison secretly conjured up between him and Bin Laden...LOL That's what he has to deal w/ daily..

The bigot is Jimmy Carter -- a true bigot and anti-Semitic. He stands with those who hate Israel and Jews, he stands with those who want bomb belts on the children. He stands with those who wish to throw nuclear weapons to the US, EU and Israel. He was the worse "leader" we have ever had. If it wasn't for his negligence, the Iranian overthrow would never have happened but he DID know the Ayatollah who was hiding in France -- and he hated the Shah. This person should be tried for crimes against humanity- because he's not Christian - he's a wanna be NAZI.Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/2009/09/16/2009-09-16_south_carolina_rep_joe_wilsons_son_fires_back_at_jimmy_carter_m.html#ixzz0RP95HDH5
